Why This Job - Controller
This is the kind of role that does not come along often in Bozeman. You are not walking into a big corporate machine where your job is to feed numbers into a system someone else built. Here you are working closely with a highly experienced CFO who has worked for some great companies and help build out the accounting function for the company. The company is in the early stages but getting more established in their niche. They have already doubled revenue and have substantial growth projected in the next few years, both due to organic growth but also through M&A activity.
In the role, you'll run the day-to-day accounting operations working on items like month-end close, payroll, financial reporting, compliance and more. It's still a small team, so you'll still roll up your sleeve on some AP/AR and reconciliation items, but it's pretty minimal. Bigger picture, you'll help the company with a large ERP implementation later in the year, help build out budgets and forecasts for the company and even assist in future M&A activity.
As the company continues to grow, this role will scale and grow with it. You'll get to build out your team, work on complex items including being exposed to international accounting, intercompany transactions, more technical accounting issues and more. If you're looking to join a company that's growing and offers a great career path and resume builder, you should apply.
What You'll Actually Do:
- Run the full accounting operation for the U.S. business - AP, AR, reconciliations, and financial statements that actually get used by leadership to make decisions
- Own payroll end-to-end through ADP, from consolidating time data to making sure every dollar hits the right cost center and every labor distribution is accurate
- Manage the billing process to make sure invoices go out correctly against contract terms and funding limits are never exceeded
- Maintain the cost rate structures, indirect cost pools, and reporting frameworks that keep the company compliant and audit-ready - and serve as the internal point person when auditors come knocking
- Build and maintain SOPs for every core accounting function so the team is not dependent on tribal knowledge as the company scales
- Provide cash flow visibility and forecasting to local leadership and the parent company so everyone is working from the same picture
- Partner with operations on inventory - they do the counts, you make sure the numbers make sense
- Build out the budget and forecast and feed it into a consolidated view at the parent level
- Hire and grow a small finance team around you - the first addition is expected within your first few months
- Join a broader international finance group and get exposure to multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidations across a global operation - M&A work likely on the table within 12-18 month
What You Bring:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field; CPA is a plus, but is not required
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with genuine ownership of the numbers - not just support
- Solid GAAP knowledge and the ability to produce clean, accurate financial statements
- Payroll processing experience or knowledge; ADP familiarity is a plus
- Self-starter mentality - you are comfortable operating independently and do not need someone looking over your shoulder
