Senior Accountant – Construction | Bozeman, MT

What's Awesome About Our Client?

  • A Bozeman-based construction company that has been around for 20 years has the foundation to last for decades
  • Ownership that is genuinely family-oriented, if you need to leave for a kid's soccer game, nobody is keeping score
  • Excellent learning opportunity with one of the most sophisticated accounting teams in town, with the CFO and team all coming out of public accounting.
  • Rare opportunity to flex your FP&A and modeling skills in addition to supporting the accounting team

Why This Job — Senior Accountant

This is not your typical Senior Accountant job. Yes, you will be helping with month-end close, maintaining a full work paper package every month, and answering accounting questions for company leaders. But you will also get to build out budgets and forecasts and work on financial models that help leadership make better strategic decisions.

Some of what you will be building includes the annual budget from the ground up twice a year, a monthly rolling forecast across 100-plus active construction projects, and the financial package that goes to the board.

The CFO has built a great team and a positive culture where everyone collaborates. Ownership is family-oriented and flexible, the kind of place where people work hard during close and actually get their evenings and weekends back the rest of the month. There is also real growth potential here as the CFO is looking to add budgeted balance sheets and cash flow statements to the process starting next year, along with other projects this person can take ownership of.

If you have ever wanted to sit closer to the business and do real FP&A work without giving up the accounting foundation you have built, this is a great setup.

What You'll Actually Do:

  • Build and maintain WIP schedules for 100-150 active projects across 4 entities every month, covering cost-plus, lump sum, and T&M contracts
  • Make the final WIP journal entries each close cycle
  • Prepare the full supporting work paper package for your close, every entry backed up and every number tied out
  • Review budget-to-actual weekly and flag variances, miscodes, or anything that looks off
  • Own the annual budget process built at the individual project level for revenue with COGS estimated by historical percentage
  • Update the monthly rolling forecast project by project and produce a projected P&L for the rest of the year
  • Monitor project profitability across the portfolio and proactively flag trends or issues to the CFO and ownership team
  • Assemble the monthly board financial package, financials, forecasts, and budget-to-actual for each entity, for the CFO to review and present
  • Maintain balance sheet work papers every month for items such as fixed assets, lease schedules, payroll liabilities, accrued wages, vehicle loans and more
  • Be the go-to accounting resource for project managers and field staff who need help coding transactions or fixing mistakes

What You Bring:

  • WIP accounting experience is required
  • Strong Excel skills to build out financial models
  • 3-5+ years of accounting experience, public accounting background strongly preferred
  • CPA preferred or actively working toward it
  • Solid understanding of how the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement connect
  • Budgeting and forecasting experience, or the aptitude to pick it up quickly once you see how they have it set up
  • Sage Intacct and Procore are a nice bonus, not a dealbreaker

Where and How Much:

  • Location: Bozeman, MT, in-office Monday through Thursday with work-from-home Fridays after the initial training period
  • Compensation: $90,000 to $95,000 base salary
  • Bonus: Discretionary annual bonus
  • Benefits: Health/Dental/Vision – Employer covers 50% of both employee and dependents, 401k with match and PTO
