Why This Role — Interim Controller
Our client is a well-established nonprofit in western Montana dedicated to giving back to the community and serving those in need. With their outgoing contract CFO stepping back at the end of March, they need a reliable, hands-on accounting professional to take the reins and keep the books tight for the following 4-6 months.
This is a roll-up-your-sleeves fiscal officer role — think month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, grant management, and audit support. The outgoing contract CFO will stay available for questions during the transition, and a part-time Accounting Consultant will continue handling payroll and AP data entry on-site. The right person is someone who can plug in quickly, work independently, and commit to the full engagement.
Approximately 22–30 hours per week with a possible extension.
What You’ll Actually Do:
• Own month-end close — bank and credit card reconciliations, G/L review, payroll accrual, reconciliation of non-federal funds, program allocation, in-kind donations, and financial statement preparation
• Present monthly financial statements to the Policy Council and Board of Directors
• Attend weekly senior team meetings and one-on-one meetings with the Executive Director
• Review and supervise A/P data entry and documentation compliance; enter, categorize, and document deposits
• Review federal grant draws and maintain required documentation; file required federal grant reports
• Manage inventory and fixed asset lists; manage cash flow between federal and non-federal funds
• Manage and meet all deadlines on the fiscal calendar; provide requested information to auditors and tax preparers
What You Bring:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• Solid, hands-on accounting experience at the controller or senior accountant level
• Proficiency with QuickBooks (Enterprise preferred)
• Nonprofit or fund accounting experience is a strong plus, but not required
• Audit experience — you know what clean records look like and how to prep for auditors
• Comfortable managing complex Excel spreadsheets
• CPA is a bonus, not a requirement
• Reliable and committed — the ability to see this engagement through to the end matters most
• Western Montana proximity preferred; fully remote candidates considered
Where and How Much:
• Location: Office located in the Greater Missoula area
• Duration: 4–6 months
• Hours: 22–30 hours per week, flexible based on workload
